About Rothaargebirge Natural Park

Rothaargebirge Natural Park encompasses roughly 4,400 square kilometers of upland terrain in western Germany, straddling the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse. Named for the Rothaar Mountains at its core, the park features densely forested hills, high moorlands, and clear mountain streams with diverse habitats ranging from spruce and beech forests to heathlands. The park is known for its rich flora and fauna, including populations of red deer, wildcats, and the reintroduced Eurasian lynx. Historically, the region has been shaped by centuries of forestry, mining, and small-scale farming, leaving behind cultural features such as timber-framed villages and historic hunting lodges. Outdoor enthusiasts find Rothaargebirge attractive for its extensive hiking network, including a section of the renowned Rothaarsteig trail, which spans roughly 154 kilometers through the heart of the park. Mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and wildlife watching are popular year-round activities. Notable landmarks include the Kahler Asten, one of the highest peaks in the range, known for panoramic views and a meteorological station, and the sources of rivers such as the Lahn and Ruhr. The park is valued for its peaceful atmosphere, natural beauty, and sustainable recreation opportunities that attract local and international visitors seeking low-impact nature experiences within reach of urban centers like Cologne and Dortmund.
